Presentation – New Laser equipment for ENT- October 2015

L of F pres.13-10-2015 - CopyDelighted surgeons at Glangwili Hospital have received a brand new-state-of-the art laser to treat patients with ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions, thanks to the support of the hospital’s League of Friends.

The ENT surgical team will be able to use the equipment at the hospital to treat malignant tumours of the vocal chords and tonsils, reducing the need for patients to travel to other ENT surgical centres.

The laser, which cost £128,245 will also be used to treat benign conditions of the larynx, such as Singer’s Nodule and polyps.

It can be used for long-standing, difficult-to -treat ear conditions during mastoidectomy (ear surgery), and some nose bleed conditions.

The purchase of the equipment was made possible through a legacy left to the League of Friends by the late Mr & Mrs Johnny and Glenys Thomas previously of Kent House, Picton Terrace, Carmarthen. Both had been excellent supporters of the League, with Glenys being a member for many years and a past chair.

At the presentation Mr Vinod Prabhu, Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon, said: “We are extremely grateful to the League of Friends for purchasing this valuable piece of equipment.”

Rev. Geraint Davies, Chair of the League of Friends, said that they were delighted to support the purchase.

He added: ” The support that we are able to provide Glangwili Hospital can only be made possible with the support of our members, and we would welcome new members – both young and senior – who would like to be involved in this worthy fundraising cause. “
